A couple of weeks ago I sat down with our builder’s cabinet maker to make some final changes to the kitchen, pantry and laundry designs and choose our finishes.
The island bench will be red gum with the Ikea ceramic sink. We moved the sink away from the centre and closer to the outside edge of the bench, creating a more usable bench space close to the family area. The bench on either side of the stove will be marble.
The profile on the drawers and cupboard doors is a pretty standard one, with cast iron drawer pulls and cupboard handles we found at Period Details.
In the Butler’s Pantry we are continuing the marble theme, with Duropal laminate bench tops in marble design and Karaboard in “carbide” on the drawers. The same drawer and cupboard handles as the kitchen will also be used here.
The laundry will be the same as the pantry: “marble” tops, “carbide” doors and cast iron handles.
Well no, our kitchen isn’t from Ikea but we did make a surprising find last weekend. We have been talking to our builder’s cabinet maker about the kitchen, butler’s pantry and laundry. One of the decisions we needed to make was the sink in the kitchen. A ceramic sink was our preference, but they are very expensive. The cabinet maker told us he had seen one in Ikea, and it looked good. I was a bit skeptical. I do like Ikea products, but didn’t think they would have anything that would suit our period style kitchen; but I was pleasantly surprised. The sink was exactly what we wanted, and at $249 it fit the budget as well!
While at Ikea we also decide to use a sliding drawer to place the bins under the sinks in the pantry and kitchen.
Since we were in the area we also visited some homewares stores and the Home Ideas Centre at Oakleigh and discovered these:
We have made some selections for our bathroom, ensuite and kitchen. We are going to be using pressed metal (tin) as the tiling in the bathroom and ensuite and as the splash back in the kitchen.
To use these panels in bathrooms and as splashbacks they need to be powder coated or painted. We are powder coating ours.
For the bathroom and ensuite we are using the Lily panel.
In the ensuite it will be powder coated in Pearl White; 1800m high on the 3 walls of the ensuite; including in the shower instead of tiles.
In the bathroom it will be powder coated in Bright White but only 900m high, installed behind the vanity and bath. The shower will have regular white tiles.
The kitchen splash back is going to be the Large Brick paneling, coated in Mercury Silver.
